The exotic French Riviera lies in the South Eastern part of the France and stretches its coast from Cassis in west to Menton near Italian boarder. Due to its Mediterranean climate and vast beaches, it is one of the most popular destinations for tourists.
French Riviera is a glamorous tourist destination since 1700 s, but today it is known for it’s Film Festival, Mega Yachts and bright and sunny beaches. With so much to explore, it is difficult for traveler to choose where to start.
I have narrowed down the top 10 things must see in Côte d'Azur :
1. Promenade des Anglais
It stretches from Airport Nice to the Quai des Etats – Unis. It is 7km most famous Seafront in Nice. Walk the whole Promenade des Anglais and enjoy the view, but you can also rent a bike or roller blades.
If you are coming to Nice for first time, it is strongly recommended to walk on that part that goes from old town of Nice to Negresco Hotel, passing through the Jardin Albert 1er and Palais de la Méditerranée.
2. Nice Castle Hill
The Castle Hill part is located on the hill overlooking Nice old town. The main interests of this park are stunning viewpoints it offers on the city, the Bay of Angles the harbor and mountains.

3. Port of Antibes and Old Town
It is a favorite place for the visitors all over the year. It is the largest port in Southeast of France. Port Vauban is the house of million euro yachts. This is over looked by Forte Carro designed and built by Vauban, Louis XIV military genius, as the fortress to defend Antibes town and its coasts. You can walk through the arched gateways with defensive wall into the old town to see little streets packed with small shops with tempting things.
There are vegetable and fruit markets spreading the pleasant aroma. Musée Picasso is must to see the collection of art by the artist Picasso. There is also selection of excellent restaurants and bars near the port. Walk along the rampart for the view of sea or sit on the beaches and soak in sun.
4. Saint-Paul de Vence
It is one of the oldest medieval towns on French Riviera. Fondation Maeght is one of the most visited museum by visitors. It is in a impressive modern building set among the pine tree gardens in the hills. This is the light airy building deigned by Jose-Luis Sert, Sert and two Cannes based art dealers Marguerite and Aime Maeght who set up the foundation where exhibition is displayed of Imperial and Contemporary Artists.
It is very nice village with narrow cobbled stones alleys with shops and you can stroll around the rampart and get the view of valley. The beautiful interior of Eglise Collegiale, St Paul Church exudes the sense of its antiquity, is a perfect place to pause and reflect.
5. Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in St -Jean Cap Ferrat
This is one of the best of all spectacular villas on French Riviera. It was built in 1905 for Beatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild who came from famous rich banking family. The main purpose to built the villa was to store her growing art collection.
This was the place for literary gatherings and art collectors who were far removed from racier delight of French Riviera. Moreover it was also the place of music and conversation, located on the hills above St Jean Cap Ferrat, the pink washed, neo classical façade is famous for its gardens. There are sections of fragrant roses and other flowers past cascading fountains into the French, Japanese and tropical gardens. The panoramic viex over the miditerranean and rocky hill side. The main tourist attraction is rose and plant festival held in the first weekend in May.
6. The City of Monaco-Monte Carlo
Monte Carlo in the world is famous for its magnificient Casino, a true reflection of luxury and high class living. It was built by Charles Garnier, the architect of the Paris Opera House. The belle epoque building stands high up looking out over Monaco and Sea.
The huge entrance halls iconic column give the idea of what is to come opposite sale Garnier is all red and gold decorated with frescoes. This was the setting for the famous Ballets Russes founded in 1909 in St Petersburg and installed here in Monte Carlo in 1917 led by Nijinski lead off the main hall are tempting places to gamble.
The flower gardens with their lawns and small ponds leading upto Monaco’s exclusive shopping are places for worthwhile visit.
7. Roquebrune – Cap – Martin
It is set between Menton and Monaco, old Roquebrune is a medieval village at the hill top and Cap Martin is one of the most stylish resort on the mediterrnean. This is unique contrast of the old and new found here.
Old Roquebrune is defined by its narrow winding alleys and clobbed streets, the powerful 10th Century Castle, the oldest Feudal Castle in France. It was built as a defence against Saracens. There is also 18 Century St Marguerite Church.
Chic Cap Martin was the favourite of the rich, creative and aristocrative from Queen Victoria to Coco Channel and le Corbusier who drowned off the coast in 1965 and is buried in Roquebronne cementry. There is a great walk by the name of Corbusier that takes you around Cap Martin to visualize great views.
8. Views from Mount Faron
Located outside the city of Toulon, stands 584m high Mount Faron. You can take a cable ride and enjoy the panoramic views from the peak. The view cover the town of Toulon, the Mediterranean and beyond. At the distance you can also spot Paul Ricard Islands. Faron, cable car is not to be missed, climb around this fun, red cable car, the only one of its kind in Mediterranean coasts with your kids to reach the summit of Mount Faron in less then 6 min. What’s more, you can enjoy your day out on Toulon’s most famous mountain at a very friendly rate.
9. St Jean Cap Ferrat
It is located on a peninsula next to Beaulieu – sur – Mer and Villefranche-sur-Mer. It is a charming little town nestled with greenery. It was formarly known a fishing village. It welcomes visitors in a warm and relaxing atmosphere. Whether you are visiting for few hours or staying several days, there are many things to explore. Villa de la Baronne Ephrussi de Rothschild has become one of the most visited museum on Côte d'Azur. Through natural history, antiquity and contemporary the culture offered is very varied.
It’s hiking trails, which runs along the seaside offer an exceptional discovery of the coast over 12km. Beaches of Cap-Ferrat are covered with gravels nesteled around the peninsula, the beaches offer varied panoramic view of the open sea. The five beaches on the peninsula are all public.
10. Lérins Islands
Lérins Islands are off the coasts, restorative landscape away from hustle and bustle. This is a place to be seen by a ferry of 15 minutes ride from Cannes which lands you to two of the Lérins Islands. Île Saint-Honorat, known for community of monks. It is the second largest of Lérins Islands. The island is 1.5 km in length and 400 meters wide. It has a monastery with Cistercian monks and provides a peaceful and welcome retreat. Its stunning view will amaze you. The second one is Île Sainte-Marguerite, the spot of hidden coves and beaches. It is the largest of the Lérins islands. The island is 3km in length and 900m in width. This is an amazing experience for a day, you can swim, bike and enjoy gourmet food.
