The French Riviera is a popular tourist destination and with most people coming to the French Riviera by airplane, the use of local airport in terms of passenger handling has increased. 
Now days some European airlines offer very cheap fares if you book early,  as their strategy  is to increase the passenger traffic for the specific routes and their tourist are able to find some amazing flight offers.

How many Airports are there on French Riviera?

There are mainly 3 airports:

  • Nice Côte d’Azur Aéroport – Nice Airport (NCE)
  • Cannes-Mandelieu Airport (CEQ)
  • Toulon–Hyères Airport (TLN)

 

Nice Côte d’Azur Aéroport – Nice Airport (NCE)

 

This is the largest airport on French Riviera available for passenger travel. This is also the 3rd busiest airport in France after Paris CDG and Paris Orly. Nice airport handles the majority amount of incoming tourist traffic and its one of the key factors for the local economy. 

Due to its geographical location the airport is built as an extension on the sea as there was no space available in the city to build an airport which can handle a lot of passengers, Nice airport is also a City airport as it is only 6 km of the main city center but on the sea and to reduce the noise level from the city airplanes have to take the sea route for an approach to land. 

The main airlines who serve here a lot are Air France and Easy Jet but there are bunch of other airlines who serve this destination also.

There are many airlines who fly here only in summer as they know that French Riviera is a popular tourist destination while airlines like Air France have routes all year long mostly focusing Paris – Nice routes for business and leisure travels.

Popular destination comes with a bunch of millionaires and therefore in Nice airport you will always see many private jets parked on the tarmac which are also visible from outside if you walk along the beginning of famous Promenade des Anglais. 

This airport’s  location is just before the city of Nice and it is well connected to the city center by means like tram, taxi and bus, Uber etc. Tram is launched recently and is the most preferred way to travel in the city. The airport is located around 6 km from the city center. 


The best thing at this airport is the landing approach when you’re in the airplane. Since this airport is located by on the seaside the approach is just breathtaking and gives you the chance to have a panoramic views of the city and beyond, both day and night views have something special. In day time you’re able to see everything in details while in night time you can see lights the beautiful Promenade des Anglais all lit and beautiful. 

Vicinity with Monaco 


Nice airport will be main service airport if you plan to travel to Monaco by air, for information,  Monaco does not have an airport of itself but It has got a helipad and if you want to arrive in Monaco in style you can take a helicopter from Nice airport to helipad in Monaco, there are number of helicopter flight provided by MonacoAir 

Cannes-Mandelieu Airport (CEQ)

 

This airport is not used for commercial passengers, but rather used as general aviation for pilot instructor, commercial pilot courses and if you own a pilot license you can rent a small aircraft to fly for your leisure.
Therefore, this airport is used for private aviation.

Located between Cannes and Mandelieu in an open area this airport can often be used for landing with special permission. 

All the aviation enthusiasts are attracted by this airport as this airport offer a lot of aviation learning programs. Many people use this airport to rent a aircraft to fly for 1 hour on the sunny Saturday afternoon, but make sure you have a private pilot license if you wish to do the same.
Not to forget this airport is also used by the state for any emergency service in the surrounding areas or their monthly drill for practice for surveillance, fire etc.

A lot of private charter airlines offer their service to rent small aircraft with crew. If you have got some bucks to spend, you can rent one of the charter from Cannes to Paris and back in one single day. 

Toulon–Hyères Airport (TLN)

 

This airport serves the city of Toulon located in the Var region in Alpes Maritimes. Toulon airport mostly has seasonal flights  to bring tourist in the region. There are some flight from Paris, Copenhagen and Geneva for example.

This airport is also shared with French Naval aviation for their mission and training.
Located outside of Toulon about 19km and 3 km from the city Hyeres. You will only see activity in this airport during summer month when some seasonal flights resume back in the season.

Although Air France has flight routes from Paris – Toulon all year long and this is a flight you can book anytime from Paris but the rest are seasonal summer flights.
